FAQ: sending money to Portugal
Most major Portuguese institutions participate in SEPA Instant. From 9 Oct 2025, EU rules introduce mandatory beneficiary-name verification for instant and SEPA credit transfers, further reducing errors. Availability and limits still depend on each bank’s policies.
The EPC’s 2025 rulebook removes the scheme-wide €100,000 cap for SEPA Instant, but individual PSPs can still set their own limits per customer, channel, or risk rules. For high values, SWIFT remains a fit.
Recipient name and a valid Portuguese IBAN (PT50… 25 characters). For SWIFT, some banks still ask for a BIC.
SEPA Instant: seconds. Standard SEPA: generally same-day/next business day. SWIFT: T+1–T+3 depending on correspondent routing and cut-offs.
Legacy banks often charge fixed wire fees and add spreads on FX. Due’s model aims to minimise processing costs (and uses wholesale FX) so more of your money arrives. Your recipient’s bank may also charge inbound fees on SWIFT; SEPA pricing in Portugal is publicly benchmarked by the central bank.
